vitreous (latin for glass) enamel:

Vitreous enamel is made by fusing powdered glass to metal (usually copper), glass, or ceramics at usually 1500 degrees F inside a kiln or by torch. I use a small enamel kiln. The powder melts and flows in high heat and then hardens when out of the kiln. To get the desired effect often times a piece is fired many times and if it is very involved can result in as many 50-60 times in a kiln layering the enamel one layer at a time. The earliest undisputed objects to use enamel are a group of Mycenaean rings from Cyprus, dated to the 13th century BC.
