vitreous enamel:

vitreous enamel is made by fusing powdered glass to metal (usually copper), glass, or ceramics at usually 1500 degrees F inside a kiln or by torch. I use a small enameling kiln. The powder melts and flows in high heat and then hardens when out of the kiln. To get the fired effect often the piece is fired many times and if it is very involved can result in as many as 50-60 times in a kiln layering the enamel one layer at a time. The earliest undisputed objects to use enamel are a group of Mycenaean rings from Cyprus, dated to the 13th century BC.
